What is proposed is a compensating reservoir for a hydraulic brake system, with a threaded cover which sealingly closes a filling connection and which has a ventilating bore, and with a valve arrangement arranged in the threaded cover, for compensating the pressure prevailing inside the reservoir, which valve arrangement is formed by a sealing seat opening or shutting off a connection between the ventilating bore and the inside of the container and closable by means of a closing body. In order to specify a compensating reservoir of this type, in which, at the same time as an increase in its operating reliability, an escape of brake fluid is safely prevented by the use of simple and cost-effective individual parts, the invention provides for guiding the closing body axially in the region of the sealing seat and for the closing body to be actuable by means of a buoyancy body movable to a limited extent in the closing direction. <IMAGE>
