Apparatus for stirring cooking ingredients in a vessel (10) and its use in an automatic cooking system are disclosed. A stirring implement e.g. horizontal blade (15) is driven, through an angle, by a vertical drive system (16) so as to rotate about its own horizontal axis (17), and also driven to rotate about a vertical axis around the bottom of the vessel (10). The apparatus may be mounted in the centre of a lid of the vessel. Preferably the axially vertical and horizontal drives are coordinated such that the blade (15) flips ingredients a predetermined number of times for each horizontal sweep around the vessel (10). Alternative implements such as a whipper (85) or a flipping member (86) adapted to turn e.g. steaks, hamburgers, may be used. |
