In a gear shift device for motor vehicles with a cab unit (1) having a gear shift lever (8) and a gearbox unit (2) fitted on the gearbox and connected to the said cab unit by shift cables (3, 4) transmitting tensile and compressive forces, which gearbox unit is connected to a gear shift shaft (21) to be operated by rotation and axial displacement, a weight (23) is fixed on the gear shift shaft (21), which weight forms a lever arm, to which a transmission part (12) of the gearbox unit (2) is coupled for rotation of the gear shift shaft (21). The gear shift device provides a comfortable gear shift feeling similar to a gear shift linkage.
