The invention relates to a mounting and filling device for a hydropneumatic piston accumulator for introducing a pressurised gas into the gas space without the need for a special gas-filling orifice and for mounting the piston within the device which is under gas pressure. Conventionally, the piston is driven into the housing by means of a plunger driven by external forces, a compression of the hitherto existing initial volume already under pressure taking place. At the same time, gaskets on the piston are loaded on one side and therefore exposed to the risk of destruction if they have to slide in this state, for example over a spring-ring groove. According to the invention, such damage is avoided by ensuring that the same pressure rise always prevails in the mounting space as in the gas space and therefore a balanced-pressure behaviour, also present in subsequent operation, is achieved. This is obtained by means of a plunger which is thicker than the piston and a volume of the mounting space which is in the same ratio to the volume of the gas space as the annular surface resulting from the difference in diameter between the plunger and piston to the piston surface. Moreover, a backflow of gas to the pressure source is prevented.
