In communications networks, the proportion of data traffic increases, the message being transmitted block by block, as a rule. In addition to the message, the blocks exhibit destination information in the block header, which must be evaluated during the switching process. To provide the possibility of reordering the characters of a block independently of the block structure, at least two shift registers and a latching register are provided which first carry out a series/parallel conversion, then the reordering of the characters, and finally a parallel/series conversion.
