For the spring-suspension of a vehicle axle, a damping cylinder with a spring is provided, the pressure in the cylinder spaces being regulated by a servovalve. If the system pressure of the electrically controlled servovalve fails, a switching valve is changed over, in order to connect the two cylinder spaces via throttle points to one another and to a pressure-medium accumulator and, via a pressurising valve, to the tank. As a result, the pressure in the damping cylinder is lowered, support takes place by means of the spring and compression and expansion movements of the damping-cylinder piston continue to be possible, without the piston coming into abutment.
