The storage, transport and installation of covering mats for headway support under ground in mining and tunnel construction is essentially simplified or reduced by making use of covering mats without hooks formed on the head sides. The connection of these covering mats takes place by edgings and/or beads which run in the longitudinal direction being provided in the grid surface, a locking element being inserted into and fixed in the openings formed between the longitudinal bars running in two planes and the correspondingly bent transverse bars. This type of covering mat or of covering mat assembly formed therefrom is virtually no longer bound to the construction distance, i.e. such a mat can, in the same design, be used for different construction distances. Moreover, the stability of such mats is essentially increased and the connection is made safer and easier and in a manner which makes possible a continuous interlocking construction even when using support arches and a completely prepared roof screen thereon with interlocking mats. The locking elements are in each case introduced into the openings formed by the mutually overlapping covering mats, the locking element in each case being arranged in the first opening, seen in the direction of the site facing, to achieve an advantageous forepoling.
