The invention relates to a method and a device for the temporary storage of bulky, collated stacks of flat products, in particular of stacks of folded sheets, in a processing line for the production of inner books. With the subject-matter of the invention it is ensured that by means of a storage device, which has at least two storage units, erroneously collated and/or positioned stacks of folded sheets are picked up or dispensed by a storage unit mounted upstream in the conveying direction, and in the event of faults occurring to one of the machines of the processing line, which machine is arranged downstream or mounted upstream of the storage device, stacks of folded sheets which have been collated and/or are positioned without error are picked up or dispensed by at least one of the fault-storage units connected downstream of the storage unit mounted upstream. With the invention, it is achieved that both in the case of erroneously collated and/or positioned stacks of flat products, in particular stacks of folded sheets, and in the event of faults occurring to one of the processing machines on the manufacturing line, the operability thereof along with high quality products is ensured. In addition, the erroneous products are picked out, sorted or straightened and then fed to a fault-storage unit.
