An air conditioner is disclosed, comprising a scroll type compressor (1) and a brushless DC motor (7) having a rotor (9) provided with a permanent magnet (11) and a stator (12) provided with a sensor (23) adapted to detect a relative position of said rotor (9) and said stator (12). Here is additionally disclosed an air conditioner in which the rotor (9) of the brushless DC motor (7) comprises a permanent magnet (11) basically made of rare earth elements inclusive of yttrium, transition metal and boron and a driving circuit (25) for the motor (7) includes a braking circuit (30) adapted to excite coils (14) of the motor (7) and thereby to block the rotor (9) against a reverse rotation.
