A vessel 10 provided with at least one cathode element 121, 124 and anode element 13, for use in the detection of micro-organisms in a sample of a substance by an electro-chemical method, has a coating 151, 154, of a substance which favours growth of the micro-organisms on the cathode element or at least one of the cathode elements, to induce preferential growth of the micro-organisms in the neighbourhood of the cathode element and produce an earlier indication of their presence. The substance may favour growth of a wide range of micro-organisms or only of specific micro-organisms. A plurality of cathode elements 121, 124 may be coated with different substances 151, 154 which favour growth of different micro-organisms, in which case the vessel may contain a semi-solid nutrient 11 to substantially prevent diffusion of the substances between the cathode elements or it may be compartmented to prevent such diffusion. <IMAGE>
