WATER-ABSORBING SHEET

PURPOSE:To obtain a highly water absorbing sheet having extremely high water absorption properties, by impregnating or coating a sheetlike substrate with a dispersion of a water absorbing high polymer comprising fine particles having <=specific particle diameters. CONSTITUTION:A sheetlike substrate which consists of natural yarn or synthetic yarn and has 5-200g/m<2> METSUKE (weight) and 0.01-1mm thickness is impregnated or coated with 2-300g/cm<2> (solid content) of fine dispersion of a water absorbing high polymer material comprising fine particles of block or graft copolymer having a bond form of hydrophobic segment-hydrophilic segment- hydrophobic segment and <=70mum particle diameters so that the fine particles are uniformly attached to the sheetlike substrate of thin layer to give a water absorbing sheet having high water absorption properties. Since the sheet has excellent running water resistance, the sheet is especially useful for communication cable. A high polymer material obtained by adding thioglycolic acid to the double bond of a block copolymer of polystyrene-polybutadiene-polystyrene may be cited as the representative substance of the high polymer material.
