Carbon briquettes of ovoid shape, weather-resistant and of size above the permitted minimum, are obtd. from petroleum coke, steel-making or metallurgical coke fines unsuitable for domestic combustion, and with contents of volatiles, sulphur and ash above legal limits, by (a) mixing the coke fines with 10 wt.% water and 3-7% ligno-sulphonate binder, (b) blending in a kneader, (c) forming granules of above 15 mm. size, pref. ovoid in shape in a roller-press; and (d) drying in a drier by injection of inert gas at 450 deg.C.
