4-(6-Methoxy-5-Q-2-naphthyl) -4-hydroxy- 3-buten-2-ones of formula (I) and 2-acetyl- 6-methoxy-5 -Q-naphthalenes of formula (II) are new: Q is a protecting gp., esp halogen. Prodn. of 4-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl) -2-butanone (III) is effected by catalytic hydrogenation of (I) or its Na salts. Pref. hydrogenation is effected at 0-70 deg.C and low or moderate H2 pressure in an inert organic solvent using a Pd catalyst.
