PURPOSE:To obtain high-quality glass by providing resistance heating elements over nearly whole range on the horizontal sectional area in the furnace in a vertical-type glass melting furnace having a raw material charge port at the uppermost section and a glass basis material exit at the undermost section to uniformize the temperature distribution on the flat surface of the glass basis material. CONSTITUTION:The upper part of a glass melting furnace itself 10 is provided with a raw material charge port 1, while the bottom part with a glass exit 2, and on the level immersed with the glass basis material 4 in the furnace, lamellar resistance heating elements 6 having an opening 6a are provided over nearly whole range on the horizontal sectional area on said level in the furnace, being connected to the source V outside the furnace. A glass raw material 3 is charged through the port 1, and the resistance heating elements 6 are supplied with a specified electric power to generate a specified amount of heat accurately, by which the glass raw material 3 is melted the resulting basis material 4 being discharged through the exit 2. Thus the glass raw material 3 is homogeneously melted, thus producing the clear glass basis material 4 free from bubbles and undissolved matter.
