A drive device for an electrical medium-voltage or high-voltage switch, especially for a vacuum switch (11), comprises a drive rod (14) which is connected to the moving switching contact, and an operating rod (38) which runs approximately parallel to the drive rod (14). Its movement direction is approximately the same as that of the moving switching contact. An intermediate lever drive is provided for transferring the drive movement of the operating rod (38) to the drive rod (14). In consequence, the drive rod (14) and the switching contact which thus moves carry out a linear movement of specific magnitude. The intermediate lever drive has a switching head lever (23) which runs transversely with respect to the drive rod (14), is connected in an articulated manner to the drive rod (14) approximately in the centre of said intermediate lever drive, is mounted in a fixed position, but such that it can rotate, on a bearing (31), at its end located on one side of the drive rod (14), and is coupled to the operating rod (38) at its end which is located on the other side of the drive rod. <IMAGE>
