A device for drilling essentially vertical boreholes has a guide part (22), which can be fastened to the borehole wall by means of a clamping device, and a working part (21) with a drilling tool (1) which moves relative to the guide part (22). The clamping device comprises clamping pieces (10) which can be moved radially on two clamping planes (AE, BE) by linear drives (14), and forms, at least partly, an adjustment device for adjusting the guide part (22) in a predetermined direction, in order to rapidly re-establish the verticality of a borehole. Each linear drive (14) can be controlled separately in at least one clamping plane. Displacement-measuring devices (47) are connected, at least in part, to the linear drives (14). The clamping device also comprises an actuating system and a separate release device (72, 74, 75, 82, or 92, 83 or 93).
