An internal combustion engine with a cross-flow cylinder head, in particular an air-cooled single cylinder for internal combustionengines for motorcycles, comprises a control shaft for valves controlling gas exchange channels and a scavenging direction SR essentially centered above the path of the gas exchange channels in the cross-flow cylinder head. In order to achieve good cooling of the valve arrangement with relatively rigid valve control, the inlet and outlet valves are arranged in essentially parallel planes in the direction of scavenging, and the control shaft drives rocker arms associated with the valves by means of tappets arranged in the cross-flow cylinder head.
