An auxiliary apparatus serves to remove defects in brushes, especially tooth brushes. These defects consist, in particular, of individual bristles (2, 2a) projecting laterally or beyond the plane (7) of the bristle ends respectively. These bristles can be removed by means of the auxiliary apparatus by either burning, melting, cutting or extracting them. The number of rejects can thus be significantly reduced. The apparatus may also include a scanner for detecting any defect in the flat stamping surface of the brushes. <IMAGE>
