A traffic sign, e.g. a warning sign, has a sign part and a base plate (F) about which the sign part can give way under given loads in order to avoid damage to motor vehicles accidentally running into it, e.g. at motorway construction sites. The base plate (F) has a first shaped hollow (20) for receiving the foot part (10) of the sign part, and said foot part (10) contains a transverse bolt (73) which is guided in a second shaped hollow (48). The latter is delimited at the top by delimiting means (30, 31). As a result, the sign part can tilt, when under load, in one direction, without however leaving the base plate (F) with its foot part (10). An energy absorber (62) made of metal, e.g. sheet metal, is deformed during a lateral impact (force arrow 84) and thereby absorbs impact energy.
