A system and method are described for producing a substantially flicker-free infrared (IR) or ultraviolet (UV) real-time video image. A video projector system (4) is used to produce a substantially flicker-free optical video image (14), which is then applied to a liquid crystal light valve (LCLV) (18) to modulate and impose the video image upon a readout IR or UV beam (30). The optical projector (4) preferably employs a high impedance electro-optic crystal (40) which receives a video pattern of electric charges from an electron beam (52) operating in conjunction with a conductive grid (48) adjacent the crystal (40), the grid (48) receiving a video signal in synchronism with the scanning electron beam (52). The LCLV (18) is preferably of the type which includes a liquid crystal layer (74) integrated within a metal-oxide-semiconductor structure (58, 68, 78). The undesirable effects of any asymmetry between the WRITE and ERASE response times of the video projector (4) are reduced by making the WRITE response faster than the ERASE response, and having the LCLV (18) operational voltage threshold above the voltage level attained at the end of an ERASE period. In this manner an incomplete video projector ERASE results in a complete LCLV ERASE. |
