PURPOSE:To reduce the degradation of a processing liquid due to air oxidation and the evaporation of this liquid by using an automatic developing machine, where the aperture rate is <=0.03, to perform development at the time of developing an exposed silver halide photosensitive material with an alkaline processing liquid having >=11pH to form a high contrast negative picture. CONSTITUTION:In the method where the exposed silver halide photosensitive material is developed with the alkaline processing liquid having >=11pH to form a high contrast negative image, the automatic developing machine where the aperture rate of the developing part is <=0.03 is used to perform development. A floating lid 8 is provided on the liquid surface in a developing tank 1, and slits 9 and 10 are provided in the entrance and the exit for the photosensitive material on this floating lid so that the photosensitive material is fed to carrying rolls in the developing tank 1 and is fed out from carrying rolls in the developing tank 1. Thus, a stable performance is obtained in various processing environmental conditions, namely, in temperature and humidity conditions in the winter and the summer and at the time of variance of CO2 gas concentration in air or the like, and the degradation of a developer and a preserving agent and the evaporation of water are reduced. |
