A method for treating liq. waste comprises (i) adjusting pH in the waste below 4 esp. 2-4 with H2SO4 or HCl and adding iron polysulfate [of formula (Fe(OH)n(SO4)(3-n)/2)m, m<2, m>10 or sludge (contg. FeSO4, Fe2(SO4)3, FeCl2, FeCl3, CuSO4, NiSO4, NiCl2, ZnCl2, heavy metal ion and calcium ion) to form iron chelate compd., (ii) adjusting pH above 9 esp. 9-10 with Ca(OH)2 to form heavy metal hydroxides (HMH), and (iii) adding anionic (or cationic or nonionic) polymeric coagulant 0.5-10 ppm esp. 1-2 ppm and sepg. HMH.
