Sawing and cutting apparatus for logs includes at least one knife head which serves as a cutting tool for the production of wood chips. At least one saw blade axially spaced from the knife head is connected to a saw shaft and, is axially displaceable and serves for cutting at least one sideboard. The knife head is connected to a hollow shaft the saw shaft being coaxially rotatable and axially displaceable in the hollow shaft. The saw shaft is connected to a drive apparatus which provides a higher rotational speed than the hollow shaft. A second circular saw blade is attached on the front side of the knife head facing the first circular saw blade.
