The elevator system comprises an elevator car accommodated in a hoistway and movable in the vertical direction. A screw shaft is vertically disposed in the hoistway and has a screw thread formed on the outer peripheral surface. A rotary element is mounted on the elevator car, adapted to be thereaded with the screw shaft. A drive source is mounted on the elevator car for driving the rotary element to rotate. A mechanism restrains the rotation of the screw shaft at least in the normal operating condition of the elevator system.
