PIVOTAL SLIDING GATE VALVE A pivotal sliding gate valve for the outlet of a metallurgical vessel 1 includes a housing 3 and a refractory base plate 6 in sliding contact with a refractory sliding plate 26 which is carried by a frame 25 which in turn is carried by a pivotal lever 20 and can pivot with respect thereto about an axis 27. Pivotal lever 20 is connected to a pivot pin 7 by an annular partspherical ball joint 21,22 which extends around the pivot pin 7 and acts as a journal bearing. One of the partspherical surfaces of the ball joint is carried by the pivotal link 20 and the other is carried by a clamping member 23 which is movably retained on the end of the pivot pin 7 by a screw thread 28. The housing carries a roller 11 which acts on a roller track 24 carried by the pivotal lever 20 and exerts a torque on the latter about the pivot pin 7 to press the sliding plate 26 into contact with the base plate 6.
