PURPOSE:To execute a fiber optical phase modulation having high efficiency and high band width, by providing an electrode on the inside and outside cylindrical surfaces of a thin cylindrical piezoelectric ceramic vibrator polarized in the diameter direction, setting at least one electrode to prescribed width, and winding an optical fiber around the outside cylindrical surface of its part. CONSTITUTION:On the outside of a thin cylindrical piezoelectric ceramic vibrator 3 polarized in the diameter direction, an electrode 4 having width of 1.3-4 times as thick as the cylinder, and on its inside, an electrode opposed to it or a full surface electrode 5 is provided. On the electrode 4, an optical fiber consisting of a strand 1 and coating 2 is wound round, and alternating voltage having a frequency nearly to the thickness longitudinal resonance frequency is applied to the electrodes 4, 5. Since the bivration energy is localized under the electrode 4, optical phase modulation having high efficiency and high band width is executed. |
