Oxygen ion conducting ceramic materials, represented by the formulas Ni(Nb1-xMx)2O6-x and Ni2(Nb1-xMx)2O7-x, wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Zr?+4, Ti+4, Sn+4, Sm+4, Hf+4 and Ce+4¿ and x is a value from 0 to 0.2. To provide better performance, lower threshold operating temperatures, and greater resistance to thermal shock, these materials, along with Bi¿2?O3 in solid solution with Y2O3 or Nb2O5, may be used in a device for use as an oxygen sensor, fuel cell or oxygen separator. The device includes at least one layer (20) of the ceramic material with layers (22, 26) of a porous metallic conductor arranged on either side to form a body (18). An electrode (30) connects one layer (22), and a second electrode (32) connects the opposite metallic layer (26). Depending upon the use for the device, oxygen ions diffusing through the ceramic layer (20) causes a voltage signal to appear across the electrode (30, 32), or a voltage signal applied across the electrodes causes ions to diffuse through the ceramic layer.
|
