PURPOSE:To identify the type of paper at the time of start and remove an ink ribbon in the thermosensitive paper mode, while permitting the ink ribbon to exist automatically in the thermal transfer paper mode, by identifying whether or not print exists by means of a detection signal from a printing detector and controlling a printing operation and an electromagnet. CONSTITUTION:The existence of print is detected by a printing detector set nearby in a direction opposite to the advance of a thermal head 5, and if print is detected, the thermosensitive paper mode is selected as a result of decision to permit a subsubstrate 16-3 to rotate at a specified angle with the help of a spring-fitted hinge. In this way, an ink ribbon 4-1 is allowed to pass through paper 1 and the thermal head 5 to perform printing. If print is not detected, the thermal transfer paper mode is selected as a result of decision to return a carriage 16 to a start position according to the instruction of a control circuit. At the same time, an electromagnet 16-2 embedded in the carriage 16 is excited to attract an attraction plate and rotate the subsubstrate 16-3 to an arrow direction D. In this way, the substrate is caused to come into contact closely with a substrate 16-1 and the ink ribbon 4-1 is inserted between thermal transfer paper and the thermal head 5. In this state, the thermal transfer paper is printed by starting the device again. |
