A brake adjusting device for a motor vehicle with a hydraulic brake system and an automatic compensating system with air springs has an operating device (22), which defines two chambers (28, 29), which are both divided by corresponding diaphragms (26, 27) into first and second spaces. The first spaces (28a, b) of the chambers communicate with corresponding air suspensions and the second spaces (29a, b) communicate with the surroundings by way of narrow passages (40, 41), the dimensions of which are calibrated so that in the event of a rupture of one of the diaphragms (26, 27) they limit the air loss to the surroundings. The air loss causes a change in the behaviour of the motor vehicle and this results in actuation of the compressor of the compensating system in order to compensate for the loss. <IMAGE>
