While it is the aim of the invention to develop a special thickener preferably for treating brown coal-containing waste waters (effluents), which thickener guarantees that a maximum permissible solids concentration of the purified waste water is not exceeded, the object underlying the invention is to allow the mixing-flocculating phase and sedimenting phase to be discharged in an optimum manner and separately from each other with low energy input and without special internals. This object is achieved by a cylindrical conically tapering vessel having an overflow channel, a clarified water outlet pipe, a sludge funnel having an outlet pipe, a ring pipe having a pipe connection branch, a funnel with deflection baffle, a submerged ring with discharge baffle and a falling pipe and rake mechanism having a blade arm.
