To determine an axis (A) of a machine tool or robot, which is driven via a gearbox (G) by a motor (M), a distance pulse transmitter (W) is provided on the motor side which, apart from pure distance pulses (I), also delivers reference pulses (RI) for synchronising the distance measurement. If the transfer ratio (a/b) of the gearbox (G) is so chosen, that the number of distance increments (I) per axle revolution (n) is not an integer multiple of the number of distance increments per transmitter revolution, the angular position to which the reference pulses refer changes after each revolution. This displacement is continuously detected so that a reference position can be approached during each revolution of the axis (A). <IMAGE>
