An airbag for protecting vehicle occupants in a collision comprises a housing enclosing a gas-generating cartridge and an annular filter 42 of knitted wire, press-fitted into the housing to cover outlets 34, which cools and filters the gas. Filter 42 is of 45 to 70% density and is made by axially compressing a knitted tube. A prefilter 38 of lower density but similar construction acts upstream of filter 42. <IMAGE>
