Shell-type coolers are used, for example, on air-cooled internal combustion engines for recooling the oil. In particular in the case of cold oil, the shell-type cooler is subjected to a high pressure loading. The novel design of the shell-type cooler is intended to provide selected reinforcement of the areas of the cooler which are at risk. In order to prevent expansion at the corner regions of the shell-type cooler (1, 30), supporting shells (6, 7, 33, 4, 35) are inserted between the shell segments (4, 43). The supporting shells are advantageously adapted to the shape of the shell segments. <IMAGE>
