A lifting valve with a valve-stroke path variable particularly in terms of the maximum valve stroke forms with its valve seat a pairing of surfaces which extends parallel to the stroke direction and which has a sealing effect in the initial phase and final phase of the valve-stroke path. In this way, with a reduced maximum valve stroke with respect to the maximum obtainable valve stroke, a markedly smaller valve-overlap surface as well as a later valve-opening time and an earlier valve-closing time can be achieved.
