Device for determining the position of a catheter (12) or a probe in an organ of the body, for example a vascular catheter, a probe for the small intestine or the like. In order to check a catheter or probe without using X-rays and in a manner which is independent of the location, a device is proposed which consists of a metallic catheter or probe marking (14, 15, 16, 17) with a permeability of >> 1 and a metal detector (11) generating an electromagnetic field. The device according to the invention functions in such a way that the electromagnetic field of the metal detector (11) penetrates into the body and is influenced by the marking (14, 15, 16, 17). The change in the pick-up coil parameters is evaluated optically and/or acoustically. The device is manageable, simple to use and safe.
