The invention relates to a process for starting fluidised-bed furnaces and to the associated device and is intended for the exclusive use of pulverised coal as fuel material. In this case, a pulverised coal/air mixture is electrically ignited by a low-power glow plug in a starting combustion chamber and passed by a confined jet, whose core contains a predominant proportion of still unburned pulverised coal, with spinning into the region of the whirling bed masses. As a result, the bed material is heated up not by the flue gases but simultaneously from the inside outwards by the pulverised coal particles of the confined jet core, which completely burn out. <IMAGE>
