The device for the production of pile fabrics of variable pile height on warp-knitting machines which have two bars adjustable relative to one another and to which are fastened holders with pile sinkers which pass through the needle spacings and one of which performs the holding-down function and the other of which constitutes the outer limitation of the pile height, is to increase the universality of the warp-knitting machine in respect of the pile height, at the same time with a high speed level. To solve this problem, there are mounted between the bars wedge-shaped self-locking spacer pieces which are displaceable along the bars and which are connected rigidly to one another on a rail and are guided over the entire working width and thus effect the setting of the outer pile sinker relative to the inner, so that the pile height can be varied. <IMAGE>
