Line-drawing devices on typewriters for drawing horizontal and vertical lines are already known in many designs. The fact that they are hardly ever encountered in practice should be sufficient evidence that they have not proved to be expedient or have hindered the typing operation too greatly. This disadvantage is avoided by a recording device with a carriage (4) which can be moved along the recording medium and on which, in addition to the print head (22), an X-Y recording mechanism fitted with ink pens (23, 24, 25, 26) is also arranged, the ink pens (23, 24, 25, 26) being arranged on a slide (30) which can be coupled via power transmission members to a motor (53) which is arranged on the carriage (4) and is in any case arranged so as to be reversibly drivable for driving other different functions, such as transporting the ink ribbon, transporting and raising the correction ribbon. The respectively adjusted ink pen (23, 24, 25, 26) is then brought into contact with the recording medium (1). By adjusting the recording medium (1) and the carriage (4) via the drive motors (5, 15), any desired contours can be produced on the recording medium (1) in a very simple manner. In an advantageous further development, the recording mechanism is arranged so as to be exchangeable on the exchangeable ink-ribbon cartridge (16) with the ink-ribbon spools (17, 18). <IMAGE>
