Known manipulating devices for transport boxes are designed as gripping gear or carrying forks or drive-in forks which necessitate lateral clearance spaces next to the stack units. Direct stacking or individual removal of a box from a plate is only possible in several steps, if need be by manual intervention. A novel manipulating device is designed as grips (10) which with a supporting arm (14) and a retaining arm (16) clasps the respective transport box (12) at its profiled edge (11) and thus permits the manipulation of the transport box (12). An additional lever transmission serves to set the gripping force as a function of load. The manipulating device is used in workshops and stores. <IMAGE>
