PURPOSE: To discriminate types of paper sheets accurately by arranging a 1st detection means to detect the presence of paper sheet and moving amount and a 2nd detection means to obtain an electric signal in response to the contrast of paper sheet along the passing direction of the paper sheet to a prescribed position on the paper sheet carrying path. CONSTITUTION: A paper sheet 21 is fed by a roller 22 driven by a motor or the like in the direction of the arrow. The presence of the paper sheet is sensed by one passing sensors 23-1, 23-2 or over and a contrast pattern of the paper sheet is sensed by a pattern sensor 24-1 located in the vicinity of a center line C1 in the lengthwise side of the paper sheet and one pattern sensor 24-2-24-L or over located at a prescribed position. In this case, the moving amount of the paper sheet 21 is sensed by an encoder 28 driven by a gear 26 fitted to a rotary shaft 25 of the roller 22 via other gear 27. Thus, the distance from the center point is selected, a deviation in a set line segment block is not almost caused and the paper sheet type is accurately discriminated based on the contrast of the paper sheet in the line segment block. |
