A sintered silicon nitride ceramic article has the composition of (i) max. 10 wt.% (excluding 0%) of at least one of sararium oxide, cerium oxide, lanthanum oxide, neodymium oxide and preaseodymium oxide, (ii) max. 10 wt.% (excluding 0%) aluminium nitride, (iii) max. 5 wt.% (excluding 0%) of at least one of zirconium oxide, magnesium oxide and titanium oxide, and (iv) balance silicon nitride. Production of the article involves sintering a moulded mass of the ceramic mixture in a non-oxidising atmosphere at 1650-1850 deg.C.
