A process for the preparation of alkylene oxide adducts of active hydrogen containing organic compounds, which comprises contacting and reacting a vicinal alkylene oxide with an active hydrogen containing organic compound, in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of one or more soluble basic compounds of one or more of the elements of the lanthanum series.
