A rolling mill roll assembly comprising a roll shaft (10) having a tapered portion (14) and an annular roll (22) surrounding said tapered portion. So that the roll stresses when rolling under high load conditions are minimized, and so that torque is transmitted to the work roll in an improved fashion, the roll (22) has circumferentially spaced keys (22c) on an outer face (22b), a drive ring (29) splined on an end portion (16) of the roll shaft (10) has key members (34) which engage said keys, and a tapered sleeve (26) is located between the roll and the tapered portion (14) of the roll shaft.
