A process for separating an extract component from a raffinate component contd. in a feed mix. comprises (a) maintaining an undirectional fluid flow system through a series of separating units in which the components have differential rates of travel due to a selective retardation or acceleration of each of the components in each of the units, and (b) establishing within the separating units a component concentration distribution, zones of which comprise sequentially, progressing in the direction of fluid flow, extract and raffinate component mixt. with the proportion of the raffinate component to extract component.
