PURPOSE:To record data on the returning path from the going path without an interruption at the time of detection of a running reverse command like a tape terminal signal by controlling a drum to two-fold rotation number to detect the going path or the returning path and switching recording/regenerative amplifiers. CONSTITUTION:The turning-on/off signal of a motor 21 is inputted from a controller 13 to a servo circuit 20, and the circuit 20 controls the motor 21 and controls the drum motor to keep the rotation number of the drum at two- fold conventional rotation number. When the tape terminal is detected at the time of forward running, the tape is transported forward by an extent corresponding to one track at the time of just following forward recording to record a backward recording start information signal, and the tape is transported backward to successively record signals beginning with a sampled signal. Since subcode areas (a) and (c) exist on and under an audio area (b), returning path information is preliminarily recorded on subcode areas at the time of recording on the going path, and audio data is recorded on the audio area at the time of recording on the returning path while reproducing subcode areas.
