Olefin polymer compsns. are comprises of (A) (co)polymers of 2-10C aliphatic ethylenically unsatd. monomers and (B) 100-10,000 ppm of a stabiliser chosen from cpds. (I)-(III) in which R1 and R2 (same or different) are H or alkyl CnH2n+1 where n= 1-20; R3 is H, 1-20C alkyl or 2-20C acyl. Specific benzhydrol or benzhydrol deriv. cpds. include benzhydrol, 4,4'-dimethylbenzyhydrol, PO2CHOCHPO2, 4,4'-di-t-butylbenzhydrol and C(CH2OCHPO2)4. The benzyhydrol (derivs.) are useful prim. stabilisers in polypropylene and other olefinic polymers for medical and packing purposes etc. which can be sterilised by exposure to a Co 60 source, X-rays, high energy radiation (beta radiation), etc., without discolouration or yellowing and without undue deleterious effect on mechanical properties. |
