PURPOSE:To execute composite recording with a new video signal by reproducing an old video signal by a first and second video heads, delaying it by a prescribed time, synthesizing it with a new video signal, and supplying it successively to a third and fourth video heads. CONSTITUTION:When video heads 2, 3, 25 and 26 synchronize with a new video signal from an input terminal 16, and also, become a state that they trace and rotate on an old track recorded on a magnetic tape 1, by a rotational phase control, the first and the second video heads 2, 3, and the third and the fourth video heads 25, 26 become a reproducing mode and a recording mode, respectively. In this state, the video heads 2, 3 reproduce an old video signal recorded in the old track on the magnetic tape 1, and it is inputted to a signal processing circuit 21 and brought to a prescribed signal processing, and thereafter, delayed by a prescribed time. After the delay, the reproducing old video signal is synthesized with a new video signal from the input terminal 16, in a synthesizer 20, brought to an FM modulation by a modulating circuit 24, and thereafter, supplied to the video heads 25, 26. In such a way, a composite video signal is superposed and recorded on the old track which has been traced by the video head 2.
