A remotely-controlled machine for working in a hostile medium comprises a motorised and steerable chassis which can support various tool-carrying assemblies capable of imparting translational and/or rotational movement to tools fitted on top by means of mounting plates. The machine is protected by protection means which are specific to the said medium. If the medium is contaminated by radioactive waste, these protection means comprise at least one containment enclosure, partitioned or otherwise, around at least one part of the said machine under a fluid pressure which is kept higher than the pressure of the said medium, and having openings through which a flow rate of fluid leaving prevents the effluents from penetrating inside the said enclosure. The said chassis may be of the type including wheels and the spacing of the wheels can then be controlled remotely by telescopically extending or retracting along the axis of the wheels.
