Apparatus for handling books or other flat objects placed in storage containers

Apparatus for handling books or other objects placed side by side in storage containers with flexible intermediate boards placed between them. This apparatus comprises a gripper 14 carried by a separate handling robot (13). On each side of the position of a storage container 1 at the location of the withdrawing station is a pair of upper grasping members 20b for grasping the vertical edge of an intermediate board 6 and a similar, lower pair of grasping members 20a. These grasping members are carried by sliding blocks 15a, 15b connected to a control system which parts the two upper grasping members 20b after these have been brought into engagement with the vertical edge of the intermediate boards 6 situated on each side of the object to be extracted. The sliding blocks carrying the lower grasping members 20a are kept stationary to immobilise the foot of these same intermediate boards at the moment when the gripper engages. This apparatus can be used to handle objects of various kinds placed in storage containers. <IMAGE>
