An internal combustion engine (1) is described with at least one piston (3) sliding in a cylinder (2) and with a working chamber of variable volume enclosed between the end wall (11a) of the piston (3) and a cylinder head (4), which chamber close to the top dead centre of the piston forms a combustion chamber (5), in which the cylinder charge, composed of a fuel-air mixture, is ignited and burnt. In order to improve and even out the ignition and the combustion, it is proposed that a body (12) of a highly heat-resistant material with low thermal conductivity and low head capacity be held on at least one wall (11) defining the combustion chamber (5). The said body (12) is preferably to be held on the end wall (11a) of the piston (3) in the area essentially lying axially opposite the spark plug (10), the body at least partially surrounding the spark plug (10) in the area of the top dead centre of the piston (3). <IMAGE>
